Double 8 Point Star Paper Piecing Lesson 1

I'm so excited to be doing an entire series on paper piecing with all of you.  Paper piecing is something that has been requested for years but I wanted to be able to do my own patterns for the lessons.  This first lesson is a simple double eight-point star that I am sure you have seen before.  I find when learning a new technique it is easier to do it on something familiar so that's why I picked the double eight-point star for our first paper piecing lesson.

Learn how to make a double eight point start using paper piecing.

There will be six total lessons in this series.  This lesson is just the block.  The rest will include a project idea to use the block or multiple blocks in.  Paper piecing can be overwhelming when first learning how to do it and I don't want to overwhelm anyone.  The six lessons will be spread over 12 weeks.

I first learned about paper piecing from my mom years ago.  My job was to pull all of the paper off of her projects.  I have learned why she had me do that.  I said it in the video and it is worth saying again, peeling the paper off is the worst part of doing paper piecing.

What You Need For Double 8 Point Star

The Pattern (you are signing up for the newsletter and will get the pattern emailed to you for this lesson and a heads up for each new lesson with the pattern for that lesson)
Fabric cut in the sizes below
A washable glue stick

Fabric Needed For Double 8 Point Star

These pieces are oversized so you don't have to worry as much as being able to cover each section like you need to do.  I've organized our list based on the numbers on the pattern.  All numbers need four pieces.

Pieces 1 & 6 - 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" (black)
Pieces 2 & 7 - 2 3/4" x 4" (blue)
Pieces 3 & 8 - 2 1/4" x 5 1/2" (orange)
Pieces 4 & 9 - 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" (green)
Pieces 5 & 10 - 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" (green)

Are you ready to sew?  The video is longer than normal, it's just under 25 minutes.  I wanted to cover everything you need to do when making this block.  If you've got a good handle on paper piecing you can probably just skip watching the video.

Putting Together Double 8 Point Star

That's it!!  We just completed our first paper piecing block.  I encourage you to use three colors to make it look more like two stars.  I only used the different colors to make it easier for you to see those strips. Now if you like that look you can do that too.  It's your block you make it how you want to make it.
